Kicking off TOKYO MOON was a track brimming with irony: "It Ain't My Fault," a cover of the song by New Orleans drummer Joseph “Smoky” Johnson, performed by members of "Gulf Aid," a charity concert held in April for the worst oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico's history. The remix was done by New York's Nickodemus, who recently visited Japan. The program then transitioned through a cover of Nat King Cole's classic "Calypso Blues" by Skatalites saxophonist Roland Alphonso, and a collaboration between New York-based rapper Theophilus London and The Dap Kings. We also featured new work from Femi Kuti, carrying on the legacy of his father Fela Kuti, and the highly anticipated session band Owiny Sigoma, comprising Kenyan and British musicians, which includes Damon Albarn, frontman for Blur and Gorillaz. The 30-minute show offered a journey through blues, Caribbean, and Afro sounds, highlighting exciting roots music.
