The 41st: JOURNAL STANDARD – A Lifestyle Brand with a Distinct Philosophy

JOURNAL STANDARD
A Shop That Re-examines the Essence of Selection

New Classics Begin at JOURNAL STANDARD Omotesando

“An Antenna Shop Exploring New Standards” is the concept behind JOURNAL STANDARD Omotesando. The store selects not only established brands but also those poised for widespread recognition and enduring popularity from around the globe. This series, 'JOURNAL STANDARD's New Initiatives,' delivered weekly from OPENERS' unique perspective, delves into its allure.

This week, we introduce Deus Ex Machina for men and Calder for women. While their approaches differ, both are brands with a strong philosophy towards life. We want to share the appeal that JOURNAL STANDARD resonates with.

Special Collaboration Designs Unveiled
Deus Ex Machina

Born in Australia in 2006, Deus Ex Machina, meaning “god from the machine” in Latin, is rooted in cultures like motorcycling, surfing, and skateboarding. However, its philosophy extends beyond simply selling custom bikes and parts; it celebrates the creative culture that underpins these pursuits. Reflecting this ethos, they also offer art pieces such as posters and paintings. Their message is simple and sincere: “We respect honest people and those who enjoy machines, and we accept everyone. Embracing all, being authentic, being passionate.”

JOURNAL STANDARD has previously carried items from Deus Ex Machina, but this marks their first collaboration. A key highlight is that Deus Ex Machina created special graphic designs for this project. Furthermore, unique items like Nalgene bottles and Imabari Towels are also available, making them triple-name collaborations. These are must-have items for enthusiasts of motorcycling, surfing, and skateboarding. It’s time to get them before summer arrives.

A California Brand by Sofia Coppola's Cousin
Calder

JOURNAL STANDARD x Calder 01

Calder is an American brand by Amanda Blake, a multi-talented creator and Sofia Coppola's cousin, who previously worked at DKNY. The brand excels in natural and simple designs, utilizing natural materials. All production is carried out in California.

Although launched in 2014, its collection of items, which express standard pieces with beautiful silhouettes, has already garnered attention internationally. If you're aiming for a higher level of comfort, this is a brand you cannot overlook right now.

This season, we've selected items from the brand's core concept of 'long-lasting appeal.' Each piece boasts a balanced, timeless design, embodying a strong femininity within its classic charm.

At first glance, the minimalist designs might seem simple, but they embody sophisticated pattern work that pursues comfort while creating beautiful silhouettes, and high quality derived from carefully selected materials. Once you hold them, you'll resonate with Calder's sincere approach to clothing creation, making them pieces you'll want to keep in your closet forever.
