A One-of-a-Kind Gown Specially Designed by Karl Lagerfeld

Perhaps the biggest news at this year's Academy Awards was Julianne Moore's first win for Best Actress. Despite being nominated five times for her acclaimed performances, she had yet to receive an Oscar, but she finally won for her role as a woman battling early-onset Alzheimer's in 'Still Alice.' Her win has been met with praise from around the globe. And what made her shine so brightly was a custom Chanel gown. The strapless dress, with its elegant train, was specially designed for this occasion by Karl Lagerfeld.

Julianne Moore had this to say about the dress:
“I wanted to wear this dress because it makes me look timeless and classic. I want to be able to look back at this moment and still love it, transcending time.”

27 Artisans Spent 987 Hours Crafting This Special Gown

The creation of the elegant, lustrous bustier-style gown began with tailoring in Paris. Subsequently, four artisans spent 215 hours on the dress, followed by 150 hours dedicated to sequin embroidery. The hand-painted sequins, numbering 80,000, gently envelop the entire garment. Additionally, the décolletage, waist, and hem are adorned with floral embroidery, meticulously crafted one bloom at a time over 600 hours using Lunéville embroidery on layers of ivory, beige, and black organza and tulle.

The finished gown was then sent from Paris to Los Angeles. After Julianne Moore's fitting, two artisans made the final adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. Her divine and beautiful appearance at the Academy Awards was made possible by the hands of numerous skilled craftspeople.

And now, a comment from Karl Lagerfeld has arrived for Julianne Moore, who has just received her award.
“I am so happy that Julian won her Oscar with her incredible talent. She is an old friend, but I am also a fan of her as an actress and as a woman. She embodies the woman I envision in the most sophisticated way. She is joyful, grounded, radiant, and beloved by all. I am truly delighted by this win.”
