Challenging the Infinite Possibilities of "Monogram"
Since its creation in 1896, the iconic "Monogram" has been recognized worldwide as the brand's signature. This year, Louis Vuitton launched the "Celebrating Monogram" project, focusing on the personal aspect of the Monogram.
Six iconoclasts from various fields—Christian Louboutin, Cindy Sherman, Frank Gehry, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Newson, and Rei Kawakubo—interpreted the Monogram in their own way, creating unprecedented and innovative Monogram items. The special website is sequentially releasing creative stories captured by six photographers and directors, each focusing on an artist's item.
Karl Lagerfeld presented the most luxurious boxing-themed items. The collection includes a giant trunk with a punching ball inside, boxing gloves, bags of various sizes, and a special carpet. The punching ball can actually be used for exercise when attached to its dedicated metal stand, creating a truly indulgent item for adults.
Christian Louboutin based his creation on a carry-on bag, which he describes as "the most Parisian" feeling. His inspiration came from the Nabis artists. Incorporating red somewhere in the design was a must, and the use of red lacquer, reminiscent of Japanese urushi, is a key feature.
Rei Kawakubo wanted to deconstruct the traditional Louis Vuitton "Monogram" and discover new value within it. This project directly expresses that desire, resulting in a bold design featuring a bag with holes cut into the Monogram.
Additionally, artist Cindy Sherman created a trunk she had always desired, adorned with numerous stickers to evoke a sense of global travel. Architect Frank Gehry crafted a handbag that showcases his signature mastery of spectacular shapes and curves, featuring an asymmetrically twisted, sculptural form. Product designer Marc Newson unveiled a backpack made with soft sheepskin, pursuing both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
