"SMALL TRADES"
For the DIESEL BLACK GOLD men's collection, Andreas Melbostad looked to the workers photographed by the master of fashion photography, Irving Penn, in the 1950s. Centered around the brand's iconic denim, the collection is infused with various workwear essences, creating a sophisticated and urban aesthetic. For this feature, Yuma Tomoki, our Editor-in-Chief, presents a fashion story paying homage to Irving Penn's "SMALL TRADES" project.

Utility Chic Workwear Meets Industrial Urban Romance
This season, DIESEL BLACK GOLD presents a men's collection inspired by the styles of workers captured by Irving Penn.
Irving Penn, one of the most influential American fashion photographers of the 20th century, gained fame for his modern and innovative photography for publications like "Harper's Bazaar" and "Vogue." His "SMALL TRADES" portrait series, shot between 1950 and 1951, features realistic depictions of workers from various fields—coal miners, teachers, butchers, and cleaners—alongside their tools of the trade in Paris, London, and New York.
Crisp, raw denim sets, hickory-striped oversized work jackets, and sweatshirt pullovers with integrated shirts are among the offerings. Even with workwear as a base, DIESEL BLACK GOLD imbues these pieces with its signature clean and urban sensibility.
For women, the collection accelerates the feminine direction from the previous season, centering on mini-length dresses adorned with abundant ruffles and lace, rather than the usual studs and tough leather. Military elements, such as MA-1 style jackets and lace-up boots, are subtly incorporated to balance the sweetness, creating a powerful, romantic style that is more than just feminine.
The men's collection offers a modern wardrobe that blends workwear with utility design and the DIESEL BLACK GOLD attitude. For women, it expresses a new form of urban femininity. The iconic, functional industrial mood is balanced with a sweet, romantic atmosphere, resulting in an exquisite style. We hope you find inspiration for your spring and summer wardrobes in the styling by Yuma Tomoki, our Editor-in-Chief.
"For the Spring/Summer 2017 season, the collection is based on working-class attire from the 1950s. With that in mind, I drew inspiration from Irving Penn's photo book 'SMALL TRADES' to create a fashion story in the style of portraits."
"The extra-long denim, with its unique silhouette that gathers at the hem, is part of DIESEL BLACK GOLD's signature series. I styled it imagining a situation where workers in the past couldn't afford perfectly fitting pants, or simply wore what they had without alterations. It can be interesting to think about styling based on such 'imagined' scenarios."
"For the women's line, I envisioned a woman who is like an oasis, providing comfort next to the rugged worker. Someone with a beautiful and delicate heart. This season offers many items that are casual yet possess feminine charm, allowing for sophisticated styling with a perfect balance of sweetness and toughness, avoiding extremes."
