Craftsmanship and Quality for Mature Fashion

Galliano (Maison Margiela),
Junya Takahashi (UNDERCOVER), Kei Ninomiya

John Galliano revived the vibrant 80s, fashion's golden age. Noir Kei Ninomiya also challenged convention with designs that eschew sewing. The work of designers looking a decade ahead is particularly striking.

Designers Looking a Decade Ahead

A workshop was held on the theme of "The Future of Fashion Trends and the Trend Business." (Organized by: CARATO71PROJECT WORKSHOP)

Recently, we've seen a rise in real collections focused on styling and prêt-à-porter collections incorporating the artistry of couture. As the population declines and society shifts from growth to maturity, what will the next decade bring?

John Galliano, Creative Director of Maison Margiela, reflected, "I want today's young people to experience the joy of fashion more. The 70s and 80s had such energy and fun in fashion." For the 2016-17 Autumn/Winter collection, he presented a collection weaving together the spirit and fashion tastes of those eras. This season's major trend, collage, is infused with a sense of time. At the sister brand, MM6 Maison Margiela, they offered a lineup of basic, high-quality items.

UNDERCOVER has matured significantly. The collection, featuring silver-haired models, exudes a refined quality. Printed tops are layered with relaxed velvet trousers and voluminous long coats. Playful details like long scarves and large out-seam pockets remain. It was a collection that left a lasting impression.

Noir Kei Ninomiya, a brand under Comme des Garçons, held a small show in a showroom at Place Vendôme during Paris Fashion Week. Their ambitious approach involves creating garments through methods other than sewing, such as braiding and twisting fabric and leather. Noir is a collection exclusively in black. The faux fur coat, adorned with studs individually attached by hand, is a masterpiece.
