Introducing the Timeless New Icon Bag, "Runway Bag"

The "RUNWAY BAG," a new addition to the DIOR 2016-17 Autumn/Winter collection, has arrived. Featuring a structured silhouette, this new icon bag from Dior is crafted with artisanal embroidery across its entirety, exotic skins, or the maison's signature Cannage motif.

A Bag Embodying the Maison's Spirit in Every Detail

Dior's Runway Bag is crafted in the town of Florence, Italy, a region where savoir-faire in leather goods is nurtured with passion, and knowledge is passed down through generations.

Inspired by the iconic Lady Dior, the Runway Bag embodies the maison's spirit in every aspect, from its leather and Cannage motif to its sophistication, elegance, and style. Each bag is meticulously handcrafted in a suburb of Florence, utilizing traditional techniques such as leather handling, handle attachment, and assembly over wooden molds.

After selecting the leather, artisans precisely cut the pieces for the handle, body, and inner pocket, then apply the Cannage motif. This graphic, grid-like pattern replicates the latticework found on the Napoleon III-style chairs in the salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne, chosen by Christian Dior for his fashion shows. The width of the Cannage and the tension of the threads are perfectly adjusted to showcase the leather's luster.

Next comes the assembly. The handles are attached first. Designed with a graceful curve that harmonizes with the bag's shape, they are enhanced with cork for improved usability. Leather is adhered to each handle, and the edges are trimmed. A pointed tool meticulously wraps the leather around the handle, accentuating its beautiful curve, followed by gentle tapping with a rounded hammer to set the ensemble, and finally, hand-stitching.

The Runway Bag is then placed onto precisely dimensioned wooden molds, a delicate process as all Cannage must align perfectly across the bag's three sections. The sides are set first and reinforced with leather bands to withstand the stress at the points where they meet the bag's body. Various reinforcements are applied to areas requiring durability to maintain the bag's shape, akin to laying the foundation of an architectural structure.

After attaching the small inner pocket and the flap with its two magnetic closures, the interior lining is stitched. Metal parts, including eyelets, studs, strap brackets, and the gold-brass D-I-O-R charm, are added for shape retention and decoration. With each sway of the charm, the embossed "Christian Dior" lettering on a gold ribbon is revealed.

The Runway Bag comprises a total of 115 components. This is how Dior's savoir-faire in leather goods is eternally passed down.
