Big Houses Seek a New Balance

Following London, Milan's collections also featured collage styles that intricately intertwined the era and the image of women. Volume in the sleeves and long lengths. A new balance is emerging.

Rich & Poor, Big & Narrow. Layered, Collaged Dresses: Prada

This is the 2016 Fall/Winter Milan Collection. Prada presented collage dresses that layered the styles of women who lived in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Rich & Poor, Military & Elegance, Masculine & Feminine. A complex style of clashing and intertwining. A navy military coat is cinched at the waist with a white corset. White sailor hats and detachable collars are coordinated with the dresses. Lace Victorian-style puff-sleeve dresses are paired with argyle tights and sturdy mountain boots. The show's music, playing "Hymne à l'amour," was interspersed with jarring noise. The music, too, was a collage.

70s Mixed with Asian Tastes: Gucci

Gucci, designed by Alessandro Michele, intertwined artist Trouble Andrew's collaboration prints with 70s and Asian aesthetics. Trouble Andrew released "Gucci Ghost" three years ago using the Gucci logo, and bold hand-drawn "G"s appeared in this collection. Simple coats are given volume with large puff leg-of-mutton sleeves. Chinoiserie embroidered dresses feature fringe, and the Gucci line is used as an accent on Japonisme kimono coats. Bags with "REAL GUCCI" written on them were striking. Celebrities dressed in Gucci were prominent at the venue, showcasing this season's looks.

Long & Lean: Elegance Begins with Coats: Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta presented an elegant collection that began with a long and lean coat style. Bold animal prints are contrasted with classic checks. Knit dresses with fading pleats layered over bralettes, and dresses with floral prints layered over organza. All are chic and gentle styles. Belts that cinch the waist and pointed-toe pumps are key styling elements. The many python accessories that appeared are must-haves for this autumn.
