Do the themes that drove Yohji Yamamoto still hold meaning and influence after 40 years?
Y's was founded in 1972. The designer Yohji Yamamoto's innovative and powerful spirit and philosophy remain unchanged even after 40 years.
Yamamoto's aspiration to create clothing stemmed from the idea of liberating women from garments that made them appear like mere dolls, allowing their own inner allure to shine through, the more they concealed their femininity.
In the 40 years since, the social standing and circumstances of women, the relationship between women and clothing, and the very nature of clothing itself have dramatically transformed. Born with an avant-garde spirit, rebelling against existing values, Y's continues to express its philosophy through the women who wear its clothes, regardless of the changing times.
This milestone 40th anniversary year will see a variety of events held globally, including commemorative exhibitions, limited edition product releases, and publications.
The limited-time shop at Isetan Shinjuku will feature the latest Spring/Summer 2012 collection, along with 40th-anniversary items and exclusive products for Isetan Shinjuku. Additionally, customers who spend over 21,000 yen during the period will receive a complimentary compact leather mirror (off-white/red/black).
