A Sustainable Shop Embodied in a "Zero-Waste" Circular Model

On November 11, a sustainable shop embodying a circular model that connects "clothing" to "food" with "zero waste," aloof home, opened in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.
The circular system established by aloof home eliminates the act of "discarding." Instead of throwing away clothes when they are worn out, they are returned to the soil. A key to realizing this is washi, or Japanese paper, which has been cherished for ages and utilizes biodegradable technology that is highly deodorizing and antibacterial, allowing it to return to nature.
Clothes made from natural materials promote crop growth as they biodegrade in the soil. "Biodegradability" refers to the property of being decomposed by soil microorganisms, creating nutrient-rich soil and enabling crops to be produced in a short period. aloof home has a farm in Miyama, Kyoto. When customers no longer wear purchased clothing, it is collected, and by placing the clothes on the soil, microorganisms in the soil consume the washi. In about a month, the clothing decomposes, returns to the soil, and becomes a high-quality nutrient source for the soil.
Washi, in particular, has the effect of purifying soil and water, serving as excellent fertilizer for fields to grow delicious vegetables. Clothing that is no longer worn becomes fresh vegetables from Miyama, Kyoto, which are then returned to the purchasers. This cycle—purchasing clothes, enjoying fashion for a season, collection, biodegradation, and savoring vegetables grown from the clothes—is precisely the circular system, or "bio-shopping," that aloof home has introduced.
In terms of fashion, aloof home offers loungewear with the concept of "Feels like home," designed to be worn within a 2-kilometer radius of home. The materials are all natural, such as washi, cotton, and silk, avoiding synthetic fibers that cause ocean pollution. The brand aims to be the first sustainable item you reach for in your closet, transcending the boundaries of loungewear, embodying "freedom, individuality, and the feeling of being at home wherever you are."
In addition to natural fiber clothing, the shop sells items made from washi, such as curtains and comfort covers, as well as yoga wear. They also offer refills of detergents made from 100% natural ingredients that can clean even high-tech materials like silk, wool, Gore-Tex, and denim, as well as skincare items with vitamin E woven into the fibers that moisturize with body heat, and other environmentally friendly household goods.
On December 18th (Sat) and 19th (Sun), a Kyoto vegetable market featuring produce from our own farm in Miyama, Kyoto, will be held for these two days only. We will be selling "Kyoto Miyama Vegetables" that have biodegraded from washi, along with organic eggs and rich soy milk.
Additionally, from 5 PM, a bar using environmentally conscious materials will open. We will serve drinks made with ingredients from the Miyama farm, fostering a new community and spreading compassion while enjoying the evening ambiance and conversations with customers.
aloof home has taken a significant step towards solving the fashion industry's "waste" problem. As a consumer who will shape the future, why not visit and experience it for yourself?
