A Special Case to Protect the Trophies
Roland Garros is a prestigious tournament that captures the interest not only of sports enthusiasts but also the general public. It is the oldest in tennis history and the only Grand Slam played on clay, one of the finest tennis courts. In 2016, the French Open drew over 455,000 spectators and was broadcast in 223 countries.
For this year's Roland Garros 2017, Louis Vuitton has created trophy cases to protect the Suzanne Lenglen Cup, awarded to the women's champion, and the Musketeer Cup, awarded to the men's champion.
The trophies themselves were crafted by Maison Mellerio, the world's oldest jewelry and goldsmithing house, founded on Rue de la Paix in Paris. Just as the tournament team meticulously prepares the clay courts, immense time was dedicated to crafting these two trophies.
These trophy cases were made and meticulously finished by artisans in Louis Vuitton's historic atelier in Asnières. Clad in the iconic Monogram canvas, they feature Louis Vuitton's signature brass corner protectors and lock.
The interior is terracotta-colored, evoking the red clay of the tennis courts. As a final design touch, a "V" mark, reminiscent of court lines, adorns the front.
Bernard Giudicelli, President of the French Tennis Federation, stated: "With Louis Vuitton and Roland Garros, France will succeed in creating surprise and inspiration. The partnership between these two leading French brands will be a symbol that inspires champions during the two weeks of the tournament. The trophies, housed in these magnificent new cases, will shine brighter than ever. They will undoubtedly attract great attention at Roland Garros 2017."
Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, added: "Louis Vuitton has long supported the journeys of great adventurers and pioneers, including aviator Roland Garros and tennis player Suzanne Lenglen. Fusing elegance and innovation, Louis Vuitton has consistently revolutionized 'travel,' much like Roland Garros revolutionized 'flight' and Suzanne Lenglen revolutionized 'tennis.' Louis Vuitton has also been involved with prestigious trophies in football, rugby, and sailing regattas. We are extremely proud to play a significant role at Roland Garros 2017. It is an honor to have designed these bespoke cases to protect the trophies of two internationally renowned tennis tournaments."
Louis Vuitton is also hosting the "America's Cup presented by Louis Vuitton" in Bermuda. The brand's involvement extends beyond tennis to various sporting trophies.
The trophy cases, imbued with French savoir-faire, and the trophies they hold. All eyes will be on which player will achieve glory.
