What Width Do You Usually Wear?

In footwear, "width" refers to the girth of the foot. The widths range from D < E < EE (double E) < 3E < 4E, with EE being average for Japanese individuals and D for Europeans and Americans. Even in the same shoe size, a D width appears slimmer than an EE. "For example," says Oguro, "a customer who normally wears a size 7 with a width of E might choose a 7 1/2 with a D width to achieve a sleeker look."

While D widths are not commonly available in Asia, Isetan Men's consistently stocks D widths for John Lobb's popular lasts, the 7000 and 9795. "Once customers try them on, they appreciate the elegant silhouette they create for the feet," he notes.
