Vol. 1: Combination Shoes
TomokiThe first item for this installment is 'combination shoes,' or 'combi shoes' as they're commonly known.
I've had this feeling of wanting something different for my feet for about a year now, and I often wore brightly colored socks in shades of orange and yellow. I also frequently wore classic combination shoes, but they had a 'jazz musician' look that didn't quite suit me.
It was during Paris Men's Fashion Week in June that I encountered the Gucci strap combination shoes, which I've selected again this time. They perfectly matched my current mood, so much so that I impulsively bought them. They're combination shoes, but not overly classic, and their eclectic, layered feel feels very contemporary. Of course, they pair well with Gucci clothing, but if the focus is on making a statement with your footwear, and considering the lingering warmth of the season, I think a simple T-shirt and pants combination would be just right.
Among the combination shoes selected this time, Christian Louboutin, Maison Kitsuné, and Prada feature designs that incorporate contemporary sensibilities. Meanwhile, heritage brands like John Lobb and Alden offer fresh takes with chic combinations that vary materials even within a single color. For conservative men looking to add a subtle touch of flair to their footwear, I'd particularly recommend same-color, different-material combination shoes.
GUCCI
TomokiThe strap design gives them a sandal-like appearance, yet they are distinctly masculine. The color and material of the socks peeking through the straps become important, so pairing them with Gucci's jacquard monogram socks would be a great choice. The rich details, such as medallions, pinking, and embroidery, are also characteristic of Gucci.
Christian Louboutin
TomokiThe black and white combination coin loafers, accented with the brand's signature red, are incredibly alluring and sophisticated. The combination of matte and patent leather is also superb, and they're a pair I personally desire.
JOHN LOBB
TomokiThese stylish medallion shoes are given a fresh impression with a combination of suede and calfskin. While their look might be considered slightly daring within conservative styles, it's understandable given they are a special limited edition for Osaka. Their presence stands out, unlike standard models.
PRADA
TomokiPrada's platform sole is becoming a staple, and these wingtip shoes in a black and brown color combination feature a glossy brushed calfskin and prominent welt stitching. I personally wore a similar sole in a plain brown for a long time; they are comfortable and easy to wear, which is also a plus.
J.M. WESTON
TomokiThe 'Golf,' a renowned classic from their collection, is reimagined as a chic combination shoe in suede and calfskin. To complement its sophisticated form, which is unique to this brand, consider pairing them with herringbone tweed trousers.
ALDEN
TomokiMy first impression upon seeing these was, 'Alden makes combination shoes like this?' While V-tips might seem understated, the combination makes them surprisingly striking. The contrast between scotch grain leather and cordovan, two materials with distinct textures, is an unexpected and refreshing pairing.
MAISON KITSUNÉ
TomokiThe combination coin loafers featuring a vibrant blue are the epitome of modern design. The silhouette is refined, and the balance of different materials is exquisite. The unique cut of the saddle, which resembles a fox's eye (!), adds a charming touch.
