A Look at the Brand's First Autumn/Winter Collection

Launched this spring/summer season, PORTVEL is designed by Hiroyasu Hamada. The brand, named from a portmanteau of 'Portray' and 'Novel,' presents its first autumn/winter collection under the concept of 'HERITAGE & NEWAGE.'

Autumn/Winter Styling Shot Entirely on Film

──What is the theme/concept for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection?

We don't have a specific theme, but the brand concept is 'HERITAGE & NEWAGE.' Our aim is to create functional wear that adapts to various fields and simplifies modern life, with a fashion approach that naturally emerges from that. The core idea of PORTVEL is to cross over techniques and knowledge cultivated through history with contemporary technology and sensibilities.

──What were the key points you focused on for this season's lookbook shoot, and what should people pay attention to?

We shot everything on film. For the lighting, we didn't use strobes; instead, we had a separate lighting staff member create variations, so please pay attention to that.

──What are the key looks (coordinations) for this season?

We build our style by mixing universal items derived from functional pieces, so every look is a key PORTVEL look.

Key Items Define the Brand

──What are the key items?

The key items are the '2-Way Anorak' and the '3-Layer Poncho.' These are items that adapt to different situations and weather conditions, and they form the core of PORTVEL.

──What 'materials' did you focus on this season?

We use a two-layer material developed jointly by a textile mill and a certain outdoor brand in Japan, which we've used every season. We also use a three-layer material custom-ordered from Saitos. Like Gore-Tex, the three-layer material can be washed at home, which is a very important element in our manufacturing process.

──What inspires the brand's (designer's) creativity?

The people and the city around me.
