A New Mixed Style Born from a Neutral Perspective

The theme for this season, as proposed by Kentaro Katagiri, designer of "Bernabeu," is "Newtral." What is his take on contemporary daily wear that transcends trends?

Styles Reflecting the Reality of a New Era

──What was the theme/concept for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection?

This season's theme is "Newtral." Based on the idea that "a style reflecting the reality of a new era (= NEW)" is expressed through one's own combinations rather than what is considered correct, we approach clothing from a "Newtral" perspective that transcends genres, categories, and trends. We propose a mixed style, "Newtral," which is a contemporary reconstruction of various elements born from that perspective, filtered through the brand's lens.

──What were your priorities for this season's lookbook shoot, and what should people pay attention to?

This season, we conducted our first location shoot. While we shot in various locations, all were done using only natural light on-site, with minimal post-processing, to achieve a more realistic texture and atmosphere, avoiding an overly manufactured feel.

──What are the differences in styling, silhouette, and color compared to last year's Autumn/Winter collection?

In terms of styling, we focused on layering, so I don't think there's a major difference from last autumn/winter.
However, we consciously aimed for a sleeker look by combining pieces more simply. Compared to the previous season, the silhouettes now offer a wider range of variations, from short and long to tight and wide.

──What are the key looks (outfits) for this season?

The two looks on the left in the photo above are the key looks. They feature setup styles where classic items are deconstructed through their materials. The gray look uses a densely compressed knit material throughout, while the coat look utilizes wool gabardine treated to evoke a sense of age with a burnt color and a fuzzy texture.
Instead of expressing the theme through styling that combines items of various tastes, both looks present a simple, unconventional three-piece combination. The style, not overly bound by convention due to the deconstructed materials, embodies the core of this season's theme.

──What are the key items and key colors?

The gown coat used in the key look styling is the key item. Made from high-quality wool gabardine derived from Super 100's wool, it's been treated to achieve a burnt color and fuzzy texture that suggests age, with a functional padding covering the entire lining.
While the coat itself is very lightweight, the functional padding ensures excellent warmth. It's an item that expresses this season's theme of mixing contrasting elements, such as elegance and casualness, or classical design with modern functionality.

──What "materials" did you focus on this season?

The primary material this season is the one described for the key item above. Other materials we focused on include cashmere-blend melton and angora-blend flannel quilting.
Regarding the materials for this season overall, regardless of how high-quality they were, I didn't want to wear anything heavy or tiring. Therefore, we consistently focused on achieving both high quality and lightness.

──Please express "this season's mood" in one word.

Never Mind

──What inspires the brand's (designer's) creativity?

Music and its associated culture.
