Autumn/Winter Collection Inspired by Haruki Murakami's Short Stories

This Autumn/Winter collection from METAPHORE, as described by designer Daisuke Kawaguchi, "all began with a passage from 'The Folklore of Our Times,' featured in Haruki Murakami's short story collection 'TV People.'" We're keen to explore how literature is translated into style.

Garments of Limited Radiance

──What is the theme/concept for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection?

The theme is "The Folklore of Our Times." It all started with a sentence from Haruki Murakami's short story, 'The Folklore of Our Times—Prehistory of High Capitalism': 'There was certainly something special about that era. The things themselves were not particularly unusual, but there was a certain limited radiance that the rotation of the times, the promises made, and the nature of certain things produced at certain times.' This sentence is where it all began.

METAPHORE's concept is to express a certain limited radiance in clothing, something that isn't particularly unusual but subtly present. This can be in the material, the construction, or the pattern – anything is fine. This 'limited radiance' is a metaphor for the METAPHORE identity.

──What were your priorities for this season's lookbook shoot, and what should people pay attention to?

We aimed to make products crafted from synthetic materials like Pertex Nylon and Lycra appear as if they were made from natural fibers. The lighting is kept somewhat dim to subdue the sheen.

──How does this season's styling, silhouette, and color differ from last year's Autumn/Winter collection?

Last Autumn/Winter, we focused on using synthetic materials like Pertex Nylon in a way that highlighted their inherent qualities.

──What is the key look (coordination) this season?

It's a coordinated look featuring the navy Supertramp coat.

A Flagship Model Emphasizing Material and Color

──What are the key items and key colors?

The key item is the Supertramp coat from the "SUPERTRAMP PACK" series, a collaboration with 02DERIV. This season's Supertramp coat features an updated short-sleeved liner. When the liner is packed into its storage bag, it can be used as a travel pillow.
The main body is made of Ventile cotton, developed as waterproof material for British Air Force pilot uniforms, while the liner uses Pertex Nylon and PrimaLoft for insulation. The cuffs have an inner rib for enhanced cold protection.
This flagship model embodies the philosophy of the Supertramp coat as clothing for travel. It is presented in black, METAPHORE's signature color, which remains essential across all eras.

──What "materials" did you focus on this season?

Pertex Nylon is a material that excels in windproofing, waterproofing, and breathability. Its high density also makes it resistant to tearing.

──In one word, how would you describe "the mood of this season"?

I feel this season is like a preparatory period, as things will shift again for Spring/Summer 2016.

──What inspires the brand's (designer's) creativity?
