"Jazz Room": The Tokyo Version of a Legendary Event

"Jazz Room" is a legendary event that began in 1981 at the Electric Ball Room in London's Camden Town, with DJ Paul Murphy at its helm. Later, luminaries such as Gilles Peterson, Baz Fe Jazz, and Andy MacConnell also joined its ranks.

This special event features Kei Kobayashi, who is currently on a roll with his original album "Routine Jazz Quintet" released in January, his single "Fascinated Session" released in June topping Tower Records' J-Jazz Chart at number one, and "Routine Jazz #11" being featured on Gilles Peterson's J-WAVE program "WORLD WIDE 15." I will be participating as a guest alongside the regular live performance by The Fascinations.

Music and Fashion Should Be Free

Actually, I had the opportunity to DJ again after a long time at the music event "PLAYGROUND" hosted by FRED PERRY on August 5th of this year. It had been about 10 years, I think?

On that day, I selected tracks primarily from albums of the era when modern jazz and funk began to blend, aiming for a danceable set.

For some reason, I was told beforehand to "forbid four-on-the-floor beats" (laughs). Building on the history of 60s mod, I played jazz funk, jazz afrobeat, jazz bossa, and acid jazz from the late 70s to early 80s.

With YELLOW gone and the old GOLD no longer around, it's increasingly sad for those of us who came of age in the eighties to see stylish places where people can gather casually disappearing.

I intend to DJ at club parties whenever the opportunity arises.
