Alan West & Tokyo Bike
Yanaka's charm also lies in its many residents who are shaping their passions at their own pace. You'll find more "authentic" and captivating people and things here than in the western parts of Tokyo.

His Nihonga and screen paintings reveal the profound reasons behind his artistic pursuits.
This is the atelier of Alan West, who hails from America. Every year, during the Yanaka Kōgei Exhibition, Alan opens his studio to the public under the title "Atelier Alan West's Airing of Treasures."

The first time I stood before this atelier, I was struck by the incredible studio he possessed. When I visit him while he's working, he'll share insights into paints and pigments, or let me play with his beloved dog, Hampton. His techniques and materials honor the traditions of Japanese painting, yet his style is a pure expression of his own feelings. It's wonderfully natural. He also creates large-scale works, and I feel as though he teaches me about the essence of Japan.

My life became so much healthier after getting a Tokyo Bike (laughs)
I heard they offered test rides on weekends and holidays, so I went to see it. Its simplicity immediately won me over. They started their original business five years ago, and it's quite famous among cycling enthusiasts, isn't it? Rentals are ¥500 for three hours, which is perfect for exploring Yanaka.

Since buying the bike, I've bought cycling wear and even gone out for tuna bowls in Tsukiji late at night (laughs). It's become great exercise. Customizing bikes is also fun. I found some wheels with fewer spokes, so I'm going to modify them! Please note that the Tokyo Bike Gallery is only open on weekends and holidays.
