These "Topsiders" are a rare beige. I often wore them around 1982-83 with gray flannel trousers. This series came in beige, blood red, navy, and white.

Keds / 1965–

We called the Keds above "deck shoes" and the ones below "tennis shoes." The heels said "US Keds," and they're a sneaker silhouette I really like.

These are probably from the mid-60s. I had a friend attending an American school ask me to buy them for him at the military commissary.

I've featured sneakers in the last two installments, and I often get requests to "reissue old models." The Converse I showed last time, the one I lost the left foot of, was probably lent out for a reissue and never returned (laughs). I'm happy to lend them to manufacturers considering reissues.

My upbringing in Zushi and my older sister, who was a flight attendant, gave me access to more information than most. It's only when you can compare things that you notice the differences. Actually, many people don't notice the differences. Having a discerning eye is crucial, and I've come to realize lately how important it is to be able to perceive subtle distinctions, especially in my work.

Capri Sandals / 2002

These sandals are only sold on the island of Capri, and I bought them because I loved them so much. They really suit a Saint-Tropez look, like in the movie 'Purple Noon,' with flare pants and a T-shirt. When I bought these and wore them to Capri's only sushi restaurant, Keanu Reeves was sitting next to me (laughs). I don't really have anywhere to wear them in Japan; they just don't look right. I love them so much that I bring them when I go on resort trips. I'm quite fond of sandals. I have a box just for sandals, and I'll introduce others, like Earth Shoes and Greek sandals, another time.
