Nigel Cabourn Interview (Part 2)

Interview with Nigel Cabourn (2)

Shared Inspiration and a Passion for Craft

For the first season of the reborn 'Nigel Cabourn' (Autumn/Winter 2008), the 'AUTHENTIC LINE,' meticulously produced, was themed 'AIM HIGH.' This collection pays homage to Sir Edmund Hillary, Mr. Cabourn's hero.

Insights Gained from Contrasting the 'AUTHENTIC LINE' and 'MAIN LINE'

—You mentioned that from the Autumn/Winter 2008 season, you started with two new lines...

That's a good question (laughs). The reason I divided them into two lines was my own desire. The 'AUTHENTIC LINE' is where I personally source the fabrics and accessories, and even oversee production management by visiting the factories. The other, the 'MAIN LINE,' is where I come to Japan, have meetings, present designs, select fabrics and accessories, and then oversee production.

—It's said that the 'AUTHENTIC LINE' particularly emphasizes British origins?

I do have a deep affection for British fabrics and factories. For example, fabrics like Harris Tweed, and factories like Gloverall and Mackintosh, are truly exceptional. I want to cherish the factories that have been producing excellent products for so long. That kind of dedication is invaluable.

—So, the 'MAIN LINE' isn't conceived as a diffusion line?

That's right. It's definitely not a diffusion line. Both the 'AUTHENTIC LINE' and 'MAIN LINE' are fundamentally based on vintage pieces, born from shared design inspirations. Perhaps it's best to say that the 'MAIN LINE' is designed with a more contemporary aesthetic in mind. By clearly separating the lines, I feel there's a benefit in that people can appreciate both.

—Where can one find 'Nigel Cabourn' now?

You can find them at Beams Plus, Ships Wine Label, Uncut Bound, J.S. Homestead, and Shibuya Seibu.

—What are your thoughts on Japanese select shops?

They're truly fascinating. Before this interview, I visited the press preview venue for Beams Plus and asked them, 'Why do you buy our products?'
After all, they have excellent production capabilities themselves. They should be able to create everything in-house.
But they told me, 'We buy them because you have a unique touch that only you can provide.' The buyers have a perfect understanding of the 'Nigel Cabourn' concept, and it's wonderful how they display it alongside brands like 'Engineered Garments' and 'Post Overalls.'

—By the way, do you use the internet?

Oh, well, um (laughs). In reality, I can't use it at all. My assistant actually handles all my emails. I was surprised to hear that Mihara does everything himself (laughs).
The internet must be convenient. But I wonder, what's the implication of everyone knowing everything?

—Thank you very much. We look forward to the Spring/Summer collection as well.

Of course, there will be many great clothes.
