Komatsu Matere, a manufacturer of high-performance fabrics and medical-related materials, has collaborated with Toshiba Materials to develop “Virus Shield®,” a new photocatalytic material that oxidatively decomposes attached viruses. A groundbreaking product utilizing this new material as a “mask inner” to be worn inside your mask is now available for purchase on Komatsu Matere’s online site, “Unilink.”

Komatsu Matere, which handles the manufacturing of medical-related materials, has developed a processing technology that imparts antiviral activity to everyday textile materials. This new technology has given birth to “Virus Shield®,” a new photocatalytic material with the effect of oxidatively decomposing attached viruses. It has been released as a mask inner to be used by placing it inside a mask. It can be washed and reused up to 10 times per item.

The feature of “Virus Shield®” is its high-speed decomposition of viruses even with weak light. While titanium oxide is commonly used for photocatalytic processing, its effect is most pronounced in the ultraviolet range, making it more effective under bright light like sunlight but less so in dim conditions. In contrast, “Virus Shield®” uses a special tungsten oxide, enabling it to be effective across a broad spectrum of light, including the visible light range, and to rapidly decompose viruses from ultraviolet to visible light.

Furthermore, its antiviral efficacy has been confirmed. “Virus Shield®” is hybridized with a special adsorbent, and in contact tests with influenza virus, a 99% reduction effect was confirmed within 6 hours. Viruses that come into contact with “Virus Shield®” have their infectivity weakened, thus it is also expected to suppress diffusion through contact with others.
