GUCCI Unveils Japan-Exclusive Interlocking Watch
GUCCI
A Limited Edition Featuring "Tamamushi-nuri," Sendai's Representative Traditional Craft, on the Dial
GUCCI Announces Japan-Exclusive Interlocking Watch
Since 2013, Gucci has been engaged in a charity project that creates new products through collaboration between the brand's inherited craftsmanship and Tohoku's traditional crafts, donating the proceeds to support reconstruction efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake. As the second phase of this initiative, Gucci announces the "INTERLOCKING WATCH JAPAN LIMITED EDITION," featuring a dial designed by Koichiro Kimura, who operates both domestically and internationally, based on a family lacquerware business spanning 400 years in Sendai. The dial is adorned with "Tamamushi-nuri," a traditional craft designated by Miyagi Prefecture. Following an initial release at Gucci shops in the Tohoku region and authorized Gucci watch retailers, the watch has been available at select Gucci watch retailers since December.

Japan-Exclusive Watch Featuring Miyagi Prefecture's Designated Traditional Craft, "Tamamushi-nuri"
The watch born from this collaboration features a dial designed with "3D Pyramid," an iconic motif of Koichiro Kimura, adorned with Sendai's traditional craft, "Tamamushi-nuri." This marks the first time in the brand's history that Gucci has commissioned a Japanese designer for dial design and created a watch in collaboration with a Japanese traditional craft.
Tamamushi-nuri is a lacquer art originating in Sendai. It is designated as a traditional craft of Miyagi Prefecture, developed using a patented technique by the National Research Institute of Industrial Arts. Named "Tamamushi-nuri" for its brilliant hues and luster, reminiscent of a jewel beetle's wings, it is created through a unique method of scattering silver powder and then applying transparent lacquer mixed with dyes.
Inheriting Cultural Heritage Rooted in Tradition
Regarding this design, Koichiro Kimura commented, "Pyramids are historical heritage sites that greatly influence subsequent culture and art, while also imparting a sense of eternity that continues into the future. Based on the common ground between Gucci's unique duality, born from the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modernity, and our 400-year-old traditional techniques fused with high technology to pursue design and artistic expression, the concept 'the inheritance of tradition gives birth to the future, and eternal beauty is created' led to this design."
As symbolized by the Interlocking Watch created on this occasion, Gucci aims to convey the importance of passing down cultural heritage rooted in tradition to the future by creating original products that fuse Gucci's craftsmanship with Japan's traditional artisanal techniques.
A portion of the proceeds from this watch will be donated through Sendai City to support reconstruction efforts in the cultural and artistic fields.
