The Japanese Aesthetic, Manifested in the Details of Everyday Life as Art
'Traditional Beauty and a New Fragrance – A Refined Everyday Life' presents a curated collection of works and art that bring color to our daily lives, utilizing traditional techniques. The exhibition is overseen by Maruwakaya, led by Mr. Hirotoshi Maruwaka, a familiar name to OPENERS readers, who crafts contemporary Japanese culture from traditional crafts to cutting-edge industry, and buyer Ms. Yu Yamada. It features items that convey a fresh spirit, updating tradition.
Among the exhibits is designer Mr. Osamu Saruyama, who runs the gallery 'Saruyama' in Moto-Azabu. He presents a lamp that can change the direction of light by hooking its key part into a hole in the umbrella, as well as an incense burner that can also be used as a candle holder.
From 'Nakagawa Mokkougei Hira Kobo,' known for its popular products that utilize traditional techniques with modern designs, comes a hinoki cypress champagne cooler. Its elegant design is striking, and it prevents condensation on the outside even after prolonged use. The exhibition also features a lampshade with a beautiful mesh pattern created using the Kyo-kanaami technique, which dates back to the Heian period. These items blend seamlessly into everyday scenes while enhancing the ambiance of any space.
The Japanese aesthetic, manifested in the details of everyday life as art. This is the 'Japanese beauty' born from the fusion of time-honored techniques with the minimalist style unique to contemporary Japan. These works will undoubtedly remind us once again of the excellence of 'Made in Japan.'
