Caran d’Ache was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1915. Since its inception, it has been one of the few writing instrument manufacturers to produce every component in its own Swiss factory. When one thinks of Caran d’Ache, the "849" collection likely comes to mind for many. Its familiar hexagonal form is said to have many devoted fans who find it indispensable once they start using it.
This design reflects its pride in its origins as a pencil manufacturer, and it has been adopted in various pens as a symbolic form for Caran d’Ache since the launch of the "Fixpencil," the precursor to modern mechanical pencils. Since its introduction in 1969, the 849 collection has maintained its hexagonal form, and countless pens in various colors and design patterns have been released under this iconic brand.
For this collaboration, Paul Smith, a long-time admirer of the pen, selected special colors for the Swiss brand's centenary. Regarding the release of the limited-edition ballpoint pen, Paul Smith commented, "I have been using Caran d’Ache pens for many years. To celebrate Caran d’Ache's 100th anniversary, I have selected ten unique new colors. I am very happy if you like them."
At the Caran d’Ache Ginza Boutique in Ginza, Tokyo, an exhibition of the "849 Collection of 100 Colors" (not for sale), created by Caran d’Ache and Paul Smith to commemorate the 100th anniversary, will be on display. This rare exhibition features the Paul Smith stripe motif expressed through the pens, presented in a special box. We encourage you to pay close attention to this exhibition as well.
The special 849 ballpoint pens are adorned with ten unique colors selected by Paul Smith, renowned for his exceptional use of color.
The color palette, which also aligns with Paul Smith's recent collections, makes these pens attractive fashion accessories. They seem like the perfect limited-edition gift for the upcoming holiday season.
