A Masterpiece by Max Bill Returns

The Ulm Stool is Back in Production

The "Ulm Stool" was designed by Max Bill, known as the last master of the Bauhaus, for students at the Ulm School of Design, where he served as the first president. Swiss company Wohnbedarf AG has now resumed production, making it available in Japan once again.

A Supremely Elegant Stool, Stripped of Unnecessary Function and Design

In 1953, the Ulm School of Design was founded as an innovative educational institution inheriting the principles of the Bauhaus. The following year, Max Bill, elected as the first president, along with his assistant Hans Gugelot, conceived of a seating solution for the students.

This resulted in the creation of the "Ulm Stool," a design that integrated multiple functions into one: a stool, a side table, and a tray for carrying items or books.

Its minimalist form embodies the essence of simplicity, with a size that adapts to various spaces, including dining rooms, living rooms, and bedside areas. It's an item worth acquiring at this opportunity.

Max Bill (1908-1994)
Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, Bill was a Swiss artist known as a "universal creator" for his diverse work in concrete art and environmental design. He trained as a goldsmith in Zurich from 1924 to 1927 before studying under Kandinsky and Klee at the Bauhaus. From 1929 onwards, he became known as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, architect, and later an industrial designer, though his primary focus initially was painting. His geometric and abstract works from this period include "15 Variations on One Theme" (1935-1938). He was instrumental in the establishment of the Ulm School of Design, carrying forward the spirit of the Bauhaus.
