Alcantara's Next Challenge: Innovations in Luxury Materials Seen at Milan Design Week 2025

From Supercar Interior Material to Creative Partner Across Multiple Fields

In a presentation at the Milan headquarters, Dollis began by explaining the company's historical background.
"Alcantara is a luxury material invented in the 70s. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of Alcantara's use in the market."
Alcantara is a material composed of 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane. Polyester provides a silk-like texture, while polyurethane offers flexibility. This ingenious combination achieves durability and functionality that surpasses natural suede.
Furthermore, supplied in rolls like conventional fabrics, it can be cut and used as needed, generating minimal waste. This rational approach aligns with current environmental considerations.

"Fifty years ago, Alcantara was first used in the interior of the Lamborghini Bravo by Bertone. This material, described as embodying elegance, performance, and durability, was adopted for this newly designed sporty car. It became a symbol of luxury materials in sports cars," said Dollis.
This adoption by Lamborghini laid the foundation for its subsequent position in the high-end automotive market.
"Alcantara, made with our unique technology, is a unique and innovative material used by many high-end customers, possessing functional and sensory value, and is characterized by its great versatility."
Dollis elaborated particularly on a new technology called "composite manufacturing." He mentioned the establishment of an in-house composite manufacturing division to respond to the current trend in the luxury market for customization.
"Thanks to the flexibility of the material and our network, we have announced a new manufacturing capability called 'composite manufacturing.'"
This method combines multiple complex techniques such as laser cutting, embroidery, perforation, electro-welding, and embossing to provide customers with parts ready for immediate assembly. The manufactured parts are used in the interiors of luxury car manufacturers, achieving high-quality solutions through integrated manufacturing and quality control at a single site.
"In a conventional supply chain, producing complex products requires numerous steps and takes too much time. Therefore, we have established a dedicated production system that can meet our customers' special requests, even for small-lot production."
This initiative signifies a shift from the traditional mass-production model to multi-product, small-lot production. The flexibility to meet the growing demand for customization is likely the core of the Alcantara brand.
