'Kamen Rider Black' marked a return to the TV series format six years after 'Kamen Rider Super 1,' with all 51 episodes airing from October 4, 1987, to October 9, 1988.

In addition to a comic adaptation in children's magazines, a manga of the same name by the original creator, IshinomoriShōtarō himself was serialized in 'Weekly Shōnen Sunday' from issue 41 of 1987 to issue 50 of 1988. It depicted a unique path with settings significantly altered from the TV version, and it became Ishinomori's final Kamen Rider manga serialization.

The 'TOEI RETRO SOFUBI COLLECTION EX Kamen Rider Black (Original Version)' released this time faithfully recreates Ishinomori's depiction of the black grasshopper-man, as if leaping directly from the comic pages with striking realism.

The sculpting was handled by Hama Hayao, a master craftsman from Billiken Shokai who has created numerous masterpieces. This marks his third contribution to the TOEI RETRO SOFUBI COLLECTION EX, following 'K (Original Version)' from 'Robot Detective' released in November 2021 and 'Kamen Rider 1 (Original Version)' from 'Kamen Rider' released in September 2022.
