Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 17, 1942. After winning the gold medal in the light heavyweight boxing division at the 1960 Rome Olympics, he turned professional. In 1964, he won the world heavyweight championship title undefeated. After converting to Islam following his encounter with civil rights activist Malcolm X, he changed his ring name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali. Known for numerous legendary bouts in boxing history, he successfully won the title three times and defended it 19 times.
Ali's boxing style, which brought the art of out-boxing, utilizing swift footwork and sharp jabs, to the heavyweight division, was unique, earning him the moniker "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."
His flamboyant pronouncements, such as "Impossible is a word only found in the dictionary of fools who are too afraid to pursue their dreams," also garnered attention. The "World Heavyweight Championship Match" against professional wrestler Antonio Inoki, held at the Nippon Budokan in 1976, with a reported fight purse of 1.8 billion yen for Ali and 600 million yen for Inoki, is still a topic of conversation among combat sports fans.
After retiring in 1981 following his loss to Trevor Berbick, he lived with Parkinson's disease, yet he had the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. When he passed away on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74, fans worldwide mourned his death.
This artwork is a silkscreen print, colored based on a photograph taken by Andy Warhol in 1977 as part of his "Athletes" series. The BE@RBRICK, featuring the courageous figure of the boxing champion in a fighting stance, is a masterpiece that evokes a historic fusion of sports and art.
