Designs We Can Be Passionate About
badmood is a brand that expands multiply, centered around the anime "badmood" currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video since October 2020. The anime features SEKAI NO OWARI vocalist Fukase as character design director and supervisor, and depicts the peaceful yet crazy daily lives of the band "THE PINK ELEPHANTS," composed of five eccentric members: Fishman, Butt, Rabbit, UFO, and Moth.
While "BAD MOOD / badmood" has released numerous popular items to date, this time marks a triple collaboration with "atmos," a sneaker select shop that broadcasts from Harajuku to the world, and "MEDICOM TOY," releasing a 1000% size version with the same design as the "BE@RBRICK atmos × BADMOOD 100% & 400%" that sold out instantly upon its release in 2021.
To commemorate the release, we received email responses from Naoki Wada, Creative Director of BAD MOOD / badmood, regarding the origins of "BAD MOOD / badmood" and the thoughts behind the BE@RBRICK.
We Built a Brand Around Fukase's Strength: Storytelling Through Animation
—First, could you tell us about how you met Fukase?
WadaWhen I was still living in Indonesia, I went on a trip to Japan with Giring, the vocalist of Nidji, a leading Indonesian band. I asked my friend Nelson Babincoi* to introduce me to a musician interested in Indonesia, and he brought Fukase to a dinner gathering.
*A cultural interpreter, singer-songwriter, actor, commentator, and creator from the United States. He has written lyrics for SEKAI NO OWARI's "ANTI-HERO" and provided English lyric assistance for "Mr. Heartache," among other works for various artists.
—When you started the BAD MOOD / badmood project, what did you discuss with Fukase? Please tell us about the concept, product development, and the very first item released.
WadaAt the time, many artists were starting D2C brands, so we thoroughly discussed how to differentiate ourselves.
We decided to create an anime based on "story," which is Fukase's strength and individuality, and then I would handle the brand expansion. Therefore, the first thing released to the public was the animation.
—What is the significance behind the different notations for BAD MOOD / badmood?
WadaWe use "BAD MOOD" for the anime and related merchandise, and "badmood" for fashion-focused items, creating a slight difference in impression.
—You've released various items such as apparel, comics, posters, and stickers based on the anime "badmood." What do you keep in mind during the direction process?
WadaSince not everyone has seen the anime, and few people buy all the released items, I consider each as a point, allowing people to enjoy the world of badmood regardless of how they combine them.
—Among the items you've released so far, could you tell us about any that received a particularly strong response, or any collections or personal highlights?
WadaWe've released various items including comics, shoes, apparel, and collaborations with cafe sweets. Among them, the triple collaboration sneakers by FILA × atmos × BAD MOOD sold out instantly in large quantities and were featured in many overseas media outlets, which was very rewarding.
BE@RBRICK is One of Japan's Most Accepted Cultures Overseas
—What were your impressions of BE@RBRICK before this project?
WadaI lived overseas for over 10 years, and I believe it's one of the most accepted Japanese cultures abroad. I'm particularly fond of the collaborations with ANREALAGE and KAWS.
—What led to the creation of the "BE@RBRICK atmos × BADMOOD 1000%"?
WadaFukase and I are huge fans of BE@RBRICK, so we aggressively approached them. (laughs)
—What kind of design ideas or requests did Fukase have?
WadaWe incorporated a secret message from Rabbit, the most popular character in BAD MOOD. That was Fukase's idea.
—What were the key points you focused on during production and supervision?
WadaTo create a design that we ourselves could be passionate about.
—What are your thoughts on the finished BE@RBRICK?
WadaIt's perfect! I've already put it on display!
—Are there any other things you'd like to do with BAD MOOD besides apparel and figures?
WadaIt might be difficult, but I'd like to create a live-action film.
—Finally, could you tell us about the future plans for BAD MOOD / badmood?
WadaThe series "The Escape," starring Sway-kun from episode 4 of badmood, will launch on June 1st. It's going to be incredibly exciting, so please look forward to it!
