Robert Indiana (born Robert Clark; September 13, 1928 – May 19, 2018) is known as an artist who played a pivotal role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, and pop art, and was beloved by both the art world and the public.
Born in New Castle, Indiana, Robert moved to New York in 1954 after graduating from the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1958, he changed his name to Robert Indiana, signifying "rebirth," after his home state. Through his encounters with Ellsworth Kelly, who became his mentor, partner, and one of the most influential figures in his artistic life, he became part of a community of artists including Agnes Martin and James Rosenquist.
By 1961, Indiana's works were housed in the Museum of Modern Art, and through his relationship with the Stable Gallery in NY, he was added to the list of notable artists, with his works rapidly entering many important collections.
Subsequently, in 1965, Indiana began a series of paintings based on imagery inspired by text. In 1966, he gave three-dimensional form to his signature "LOVE" image, and the stacked, sculptural four letters became a cultural icon integrated into the American visual vocabulary.
Indiana's works have since been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and are part of the permanent collections of major museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, Tate Modern in London, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Netherlands, MUMOK (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien) in Vienna, Austria, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Incidentally, approximately 25 "LOVE" sculptures are permanently exhibited around the world, including in the United States.

In Japan, the "LOVE" monument installed at the Shinjuku Island Tower is well-known. This was a commissioned work realized as part of the "Shinjuku Island Art Project" (1995), led by Fumio Nanjo, the director (now special advisor) of the Mori Art Museum.
This time, we received a message from the "Robert Indiana Legacy Initiative," established in 2022 with the aim of increasing awareness and appreciation for the depth and breadth of Robert Indiana's work.
"Robert Indiana was deeply grateful that his work resonated with people around the world. He was present at the installation of the "LOVE" monument at Shinjuku Island Tower and was moved by the permanent exhibition of his work in Japan."
MEDICOM TOY produced a BE@RBRICK motif based on this "LOVE." Regarding the release of a BE@RBRICK with a sculpture embedded inside its body, the Robert Indiana Legacy Initiative stated, "It was important to collaborate with a brand that respects the integrity of the artist's work and truly understands the impact of Indiana's genius in color and form."
Indiana elevated the word "LOVE" into universal art. This BE@RBRICK, created with his intention in mind and faithfully reproducing the colors and forms of the letters, aims to deliver that love to the next generation.
