Realized approximately five years after its conception
"KOU-AN" is an architectural project by Tokujin Yoshioka aiming to perceive the origins of Japanese thought and culture by integrating with nature through the microcosmic space of a tea house constructed from transparent glass. Beginning with the architecture of "Transparent Japanese House" in 2002, a model design for the glass tea house "KOU-AN" was presented at the 54th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in Italy in 2011. Approximately five years after its conception, it has finally been completed and its first unveiling is set.
Shogunzuka Seiryuden in Kyoto, where the exhibition is held, enshrines the National Treasure "Blue Fudo Myoo," considered one of Japan's three great Fudo Myoo statues. This Blue Fudo is said to be the highest ranking among the Fudo Myoo, which are categorized by five colors.
Yoshioka, who is fascinated by the Japanese perception of nature, has focused on the unique Japanese interpretation of nature and its spatiality, sensing energy and aura from spaces. This perception of essential natural beauty resonates with the philosophy inherent in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
In this special exhibition, visitors can perceive the elements of nature through the microcosmic space of the "KOU-AN" tea house, constructed from transparent glass, and by integrating with nature, they can glimpse the origins of Japanese thought and culture.
