A fantastical space where shoes seem to float
The Hills Avenue Ginza store (Hills Avenue Flagship Store), for which Tokujin Yoshioka handled the spatial design, opened in May 2017.
To express the lightness of the shoes, created with Hills Avenue's unique lightweight technology, the design is based on the motif of "floating," making the shoes appear to hover within the store.
In the spacious 300-square-meter area, over 700 slender steel rods overlap to create white layers. This creates an atmosphere akin to a forest, lending a fantastical quality to the space.
Over 500 discs, randomly placed among the white steel rods, display countless shoes, making them appear to float in mid-air.
During the day, natural light fills the spacious store, and at night, yellow lights resembling a sunset bathe the entire space, causing the store's atmosphere to change with the passage of time.
It's fascinating how Yoshioka's innovative ideas are incorporated throughout, while still allowing the shoes themselves to stand out.
