Osamu Saruyama Discusses His Work
This September, a collaborative glass series by Osamu Saruyama, director of "Saruyama," and Go Tsugino, director of fresco, was unveiled, produced by Azumaya Inc. Following the initial presentation of six types at "Saruyama," an exhibition titled "Osamu Saruyama's Work" is now being held in Osaka, Tsugino's hometown, showcasing the collaborative "BAR" glass series and tableware. We spoke with Tsugino about the exhibition.

Osamu Saruyama Will Be Present on November 14 (Fri)
RICORDO in Yodoyabashi, Osaka, the venue for the "Osamu Saruyama's Work" exhibition. Its owner and glass artist, Tsugino, shares his thoughts...
I first became aware of Osamu Saruyama's presence through the white ceramic series by potter Naoto Okada I saw at "Roundabout" in Kichijoji. While his craftsmanship was impeccable, the sheer presence of his objects and their influence on their surroundings were overwhelming.
“Form is an element of product design.”—However, when the compelling power of that form extends to influencing the environment in which the object is placed, the role of the product changes. I realized that Saruyama's designs possess such a charm. At the same time, I felt a strong urge to meet him as a designer.”
Designs Too Exquisite to Be Called Simply "Mysterious"
The first product where I, as a glass artist, realized Saruyama's designs through my own techniques was a glass called "t.o wine." It was a work that clearly envisioned the introduction of Western wine into Japanese daily life with a distinct style.
The remarkably simple and elegant design seamlessly integrated into the Japanese dining table, succeeding in its presence without being obsequious. As a result, it also effortlessly complements Western settings (the current "t.o wine" has been subtly adjusted from its initial design).
After projects including candle holders and lampshades, we are now developing a series of glasses designed for spirits, called "BAR." Each piece possesses a design that is neither ostentatious nor out of place in either Japanese or Western settings, appearing both old and new. They are designs too exquisite to be simply called "mysterious."
Therefore, to convey our desire for those unfamiliar with Saruyama's designs to experience them, this exhibition has been realized. RICORDO is a select shop with the theme of "memory." Saruyama's designs blend beautifully into its space. We sincerely look forward to your visit.
