Two Exhibitions Showcase Californian Craftsmanship
“To introduce talent whose work is not yet fully recognized, and to gain new perspectives through the unique vision of talented individuals,” is the concept behind CURATOR’S CUBE, a gallery space in Toranomon operated by Landscape Products. This month marks its first full year, and two noteworthy exhibitions are currently on display: “st/co tokyo show 2014” and “Ruth Kneass and Llane Alexis Exhibition curated by st/co.”

Focus on Exquisite Works and Curation
Founded by Matt Dick, who trained in indigo dyeing in Japan and previously worked under art director Tamotsu Yagi, “small trade company” (hereafter referred to as st/co) presents “st/co tokyo show 2014.” The exhibition features a collection of kurtas (traditional Indian garments) created with the assistance of Shibito Kanai, a mud-dyeing artisan based on Amami Oshima, alongside housewares developed in collaboration with manufacturers. Dick, who draws inspiration from Japanese culture and people, describes his approach to creation as “meditation,” offering a glimpse into his profound artistic process.
The other exhibition, “Ruth Kneass and Llane Alexis Exhibition curated by st/co,” is curated by st/co. Ruth Kneass, a female artist born in California, finds inspiration in the natural landscapes of Northern California’s valleys and beaches, having been immersed in creative pursuits since childhood. For this exhibition, she presents dynamic mobiles. Llane Alexis, an artist from Havana, Cuba, is known for her works combining recycled fabric scraps with needle and thread. Her handmade pieces, born from free and unexpected processes, have garnered a devoted following among designers and artists alike.
Beyond the individual artworks, the way the space is composed through curation is also intriguing. Why not visit the exhibition, perhaps combining it with a stroll around the Toranomon area?
