Where commercial utility meets artistic self-expression
This exhibition explores the importance and future possibilities of "art" and "design," featuring works that encourage contemplation of the "artistry" within contemporary "design." Shun Kawakami serves as the curator, with art direction and design by artless.
The exhibited works include:Tsuki, a hammered copper ware created in collaboration with Tamagawa-Seido, a long-established maker of Tsuchi-oki copperware, a tangible cultural property of Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata, by Junji Tanigawa.sandglasses that make the perception of time feel artistic, and a variety of drawings and graphics, all remarkably unique.
The exhibition's appeal lies in its composition, where these works—each embodying the full potential of artistic expression within commercial design—challenge our usual perspectives on everyday products and urban landscapes.
Through these pieces, which reflect societal viewpoints and vague, emerging images, and evoke memories tinged with longing, we may glimpse the "foundations" of design from the 11 featured designers. This exhibition truly offers a chance to connect with the very core of cutting-edge design.
Additionally, the back space of this special exhibition features a display of WALLS TOKYO's collection, including works by Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and Andy Warhol. Be sure not to miss it.
