Experience the 'Now' of Dutch Design

Droog (Droog Design), a design collective that has nurtured leading Dutch product designers such as Richard Hutten, Marcel Wanders, and Hella Jongerius, has been at the forefront of the Dutch design scene. In 2008, 15 years after its inception, they opened a showroom and shop in Ebisu, Tokyo.

The showroom also exhibits unique pieces, including droog prototypes
Its origins trace back to the Netherlands in the early 1990s. Around this time, new ways of thinking about design began to rapidly emerge within the country, leading to the appearance of works with unprecedented approaches that broke away from the conventional, appearance-focused, and standardized concepts of design.
Amidst this growing momentum, droog was formed in '93 by Gijs Bakker and Renny Ramakers with the concept of bringing humor, wit, and a touch of irony to your everyday life, uncolored by any particular style. Their aim: 'To transform the ordinary objects we use in daily life into extraordinary and humorous experiences and forms.'
By presenting this vision, droog brought attention to Dutch design, sparking the 'Dutch Design Boom.' The concept of 'a shift in perspective' became a media trend, and droog became a key player in this movement.
Droog chose Gallery de Poisson, a contemporary jewelry gallery in Ebisu, Tokyo, as its partner in Japan. As droog founder Gijs Bakker is also a jewelry artist, their relationship as artist and gallery eventually led to a collaboration for droog's operations in Japan.
The showroom not only introduces and sells droog products but also exhibits unique pieces such as prototypes. Furthermore, through unique Japanese initiatives, they hold exhibitions in various locations. These exhibitions have been well-received for their blend of old and new products and their distinctive approach.
OPENERS will continue to follow their movements. Why not take this opportunity to experience the 'now' of Dutch design by tracing droog's journey?
