Bridging Past and Present, East and West: Tools and Traditions for Today

Introducing KAKITSUBATA, a Nakameguro shop offering a curated selection of objects that embody the wisdom and customs cultivated over time, and the richness of tools honed through daily use.
We speak with Yukiko Shirosumi, the planner behind KAKITSUBATA, to explore the world she has crafted.

A Shop Dedicated to the Enduring Quality of Authenticity

The Meguro River area, once a thriving hub of river ports and waterways, is now known for its scenic beauty and cherry blossoms that bloom vibrantly in spring, flowing through the heart of the city.
The Nakameguro district, in particular, boasts a sophisticated yet relaxed vibrancy, with boutiques popular among the young and bars and bistros where adults can unwind lining the riverbanks.

KAKITSUBATA, which opened in the spring of 2006, is a shop located along this very Meguro River, specializing in unique objects born from daily life.
Objects passed down through generations via human craftsmanship, and those transmitted not in form but through human sentiment and custom—'manners' and 'etiquette.' East and West, past and present.

These are everyday items, beautifully refined through use, and objects born from skilled techniques, cherished for special occasions.
What does craft, what do everyday objects, mean to KAKITSUBATA?

“At KAKITSUBATA, we gather materials with the theme of usability,” says Shirosumi. “I believe it’s about things we can use, and want to use, in our daily lives. Even within the broad category of craft, I feel we can only truly appreciate its value by handling and using it ourselves.”

What is the appeal of these objects, which have existed for ages and remain close to us in our daily lives?
Does their charm evolve with the changing times?

“If a traditional form can still be used today, I don’t see a need to change it. However, when we want to use it in a way that fits our current lifestyle, we might discuss with artists, designers, or craftspeople to create something new, incorporating ideas born from our contemporary lives. This collaborative spirit led to our project with lacquerware, WAJIMA x KAKITSUBATA.”

Lacquerware, a proud Japanese craft known globally as 'japan,' is cherished worldwide.
While not originally intended for common use, the highly refined lacquerware of Japan is precisely the kind of object KAKITSUBATA believes should be used in daily life today.

“Ultimately, these are objects made by human hands, so the sentiment and warmth are conveyed through the item. We believe it is our role to transmit the maker’s intentions to the user.”

In a world of shifting eras and diversifying values, this is a shop that engages earnestly with the allure of authenticity—qualities that endure and never fade.
