Gallery & Shop in a House Designed by Makoto Tanijiri
Japan's rich natural landscapes, with their ever-changing seasonal scenery, rolling mountains, and flowing rivers, present a diverse tapestry across its regions. The establishment introduced here is a flower shop and gallery that invites visitors to appreciate architecture in harmony with such nature.

An Interior That Evokes the Beauty and Individuality of One-of-a-Kind Art
Located in Motoyama, a quiet residential area in the eastern part of Nagoya, is "florist・gallery N." Situated on the first floor of a private residence that celebrated its opening in January 2008, this shop, as its name suggests, functions as both a flower shop and a gallery space for displaying art.
Nagoya is first and foremost known for its rich culinary scene. Dishes like miso katsu and miso nikomi udon, flavored with the robust taste of hatcho miso, along with hitsumabushi, chicken wings, and kishimen noodles savored with a deep, flavorful broth, are famous.
The city center boasts buildings and townscapes that retain the atmosphere of the Showa era, alongside its urban persona as a metropolis with subway lines extending east and west. Nagoya, with its many facets, is always brimming with vitality.
The gallery's commemorative opening event, held during my visit, was an exhibition by Suppose Design Office, led by architect Makoto Tanijiri, who designed this house.

The exhibition, showcasing seven years of work by Makoto Tanijiri and Suppose Design Office, held in a building he designed and marking the inaugural event for the newly opened gallery, hints at the beginning of a new collaboration between client and architect.
This new relationship, which begins not with the completion of construction but extends from it, mirrors the process of human growth.
The future of architecture is also deeply intertwined with the land it occupies and the lives of the people who will inhabit it. It organically evolves while exploring the fundamental meaning of dwelling, engaging with the politics, economics, and diverse cultures of its time.
The distinctive white walls, folded like origami, possess a structural strength that sharpens the entire space of this shop, while also exuding the beauty and individuality of a one-of-a-kind art piece.
The sun-drenched space, while serving as a venue to convey the beauty of natural forms inherent in a flower shop, also evokes a sense of becoming a place of relaxation for the local residents.
Future plans for the gallery space include a permanent exhibition focusing on contemporary art such as photography and paintings, as well as special exhibitions featuring collaborations with artists, curated with unique themes for each occasion.

This shop's narrative, which began with the construction of the house, is an ideal architectural endeavor built upon the invisible, profound bond of hearts between the client and the architect.
