The "duo" announced by Audi of America is a collaboration with Renovo, a company based in Portland, Oregon. Its defining characteristic is its rigid wooden frame.
Renovo is the world's only manufacturer of bicycles with rigid wooden frames. The duo is said to achieve a high standard of both luxury and performance, inspired by Audi cars. While details about the wood used for the frame have not been disclosed, it is said to absorb shocks and vibrations, providing a smooth ride. Furthermore, at about one-fourth the weight of aluminum per cubic inch, it achieves comparable or greater rigidity and durability while being lighter than many bicycle frames.
Three types are available: City, Sport, and Road, each equipped as standard with a belt drive, disc brakes, and LED lights. Each is handcrafted one by one in a Portland studio.
The duo City, as its name suggests, is designed for urban commuting. It is an all-weather model equipped with stable, puncture-resistant 32mm tires, front and rear fender stays, and a rear rack, featuring an 8-speed drivetrain, priced at $6,530 (approximately ¥550,000). The duo Sport is an all-weather model designed for longer distances compared to the City. It features 28mm tires with low rolling resistance. The drivetrain uses a maintenance-free Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal gear hub, priced at $7,350 (approximately ¥620,000). The high-performance duo Road version has a 20-speed drivetrain, narrower tires, simplified features like fender stays, and a lighter build, priced at $7,460 (¥630,000).
While the pricing is higher than models released by other automotive manufacturers, it is likely to garner strong support from environmentally conscious users. Currently, there are no plans for sales within Japan.
