Enhanced Rigidity in Body and Engine for a Stronger Core

The NX, born in 2014 as Lexus's first compact crossover SUV, underwent a full model change to its second generation in 2021. It has now received a major minor change, including a revamped hybrid system.

Notably, all four grades offered will be electrified, consisting solely of hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models.

The hybrid system adopts an e-Axle, which integrates the transaxle, motor, and PCU (Power Control Unit) for a more compact, lightweight, and lower center of gravity. In addition to improved drivetrain efficiency, the use of SiC (silicon carbide) with low electrical loss in the power elements of the inverter contributes to higher efficiency and better fuel economy.

The PHEV NX450h+ is equipped with a newly developed battery boasting an 8% increase in power output and a 30% increase in capacity. Its EV cruising range has been significantly extended to 140 km in WLTC mode, and it also supports DC fast charging.

Furthermore, by changing the orientation of the battery cells from the conventional front-to-back direction to a lateral one, the rigidity of the entire body in the lateral direction has been improved. This, combined with the lower center of gravity due to the lowered battery position, significantly contributes to improved handling and driving stability.

Regarding body rigidity, in addition to strengthening the front and rear ends, a new floor cross member has been added, and the edges of the tunnel have been reinforced, increasing floor rigidity by approximately 25%. This also leads to improved ride comfort and reduced road noise.

Additionally, the shape of the engine block has been modified to enhance rigidity. By improving the fastening rigidity between the transaxle and engine using reinforcement members, the resonance with the engine's combustion fluctuation frequency is shifted, reducing unpleasant noise and vibration.

The exterior has further refined and evolved the inherited design theme of "VITAL TECH," updating it to a dynamic and modern design.

The headlights, in particular, integrate turn signal and daytime running lights, creating a sharp expression. At the rear, Lexus's first "double L-signature" has been adopted, reinforcing the wide and low impression. An "F SPORT" model is also available for those seeking a sportier style.

The interior creates a simple and clean space. The 12.3-inch liquid crystal meter and 14-inch panel are arranged horizontally to minimize eye movement, resulting in a driving space that combines a sense of openness with tranquility.

Furthermore, it is equipped with "Sensory Concierge," which synchronizes illumination, music, climate control, seat temperature, and fragrance across three modes to elevate the mood or relax the occupants. This reflects Lexus's unique worldview.

The steering wheel has been reduced in diameter by 10 mm to 360 mm, and the power steering control has been thoroughly tuned, evolving into nimble and linear handling.

The NX, now an electrified model, marks the start of a new journey. We await further details such as release timing and pricing in Japan.

Learn More About the Lexus NX

Q. Please tell me about the car name NX and the model's origin.
The NX was born in 2014 as Lexus's first compact crossover SUV. The car name is derived from "Nimble Crossover," combining "N" from "Nimble," meaning "agile and exhilarating," with "X" representing a "crossover SUV" with a coupe-like style. With its agile driving performance and stylish design for urban environments, it has gained support from customers worldwide, growing into a global core model for Lexus, with cumulative sales of approximately 1.9 million units in over 90 countries and regions as of the end of July 2026.

Q. What is the development theme "DISCOVER YOUR EDGE" for the new model?
At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, LEXUS declared its transformation into a brand that offers unique experiences to each customer under the brand message ""DISCOVER" - Doing it without imitating anyone." In planning the new NX, this was followed by the theme "DISCOVER YOUR EDGE," and development proceeded with the aim of becoming a presence that brings new stimulation to customers' daily lives and further expands their possibilities. While cherishing the value of balancing sportiness and utility, which has been the hallmark of previous NX models, the hybrid system has been renewed, and the interior and exterior designs have been refreshed to achieve transformation befitting the electrified era.

Q. How can I enjoy the scents and ambiance with Sensory Concierge?
Sensory Concierge is a function that synchronizes illumination, music, climate control, seat temperature, and fragrance to create an in-car atmosphere that aligns with the occupants' feelings. Three modes are available: INSPIRE, RADIANCE, and REVITALIZE. Fragrances include five types symbolizing LEXUS's design philosophy of "Time": Celestial Light, Gentle Breeze, Verdant Zephyr, Twilight, and Dawn. The generator in the glove box can hold three types simultaneously. You can select your preferred fragrance from a dedicated screen, and separately from the Sensory Concierge modes, you can enjoy each fragrance in conjunction with original videos, music, and illumination.
