Adopting the Fiesta's Face
Fordhas given its C-segment compact car, theFocus, a minor model change. The updated model is set to hit the market in the latter half of 2014 as a 2015 model. This new model, already unveiled and generating buzz at the "Mobile World Congress," an IT exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain, is expected to have its full details announced at the Geneva Motor Show, opening next week.
The new "Focus" adopts Ford's "Global Design DNA," an evolution of Kinetic Design, with a renewed focus on the front fascia. The sharp headlights and prominent grille share the same design language as theFiesta, reinforcing the connection to modern Ford vehicles. Upon closer inspection, this facelift also includes revisions to the hood and around the taillights, contributing to a sportier image.
The sedan version introduced in North America reportedly features a modified trunk lid shape to match the new front fascia. Ford is steadily transitioning to this new front-end design. While not yet released in Japan, models such as the "Fusion," covering the D-E segment, and the "C-MAX," the MPV variant of the Focus, along with all North American passenger car models except the Mustang, have adopted the "Global Design DNA" face, ranging from the Fiesta to the Taurus.
The interior has been updated with satin chrome accents, revised seat trim, and changes to the switchgear. A new center console incorporating adjustable cup holders has also been added, enhancing practicality. Furthermore, the number of switches on the dashboard has been reduced, with subtle design revisions aimed at enabling more intuitive operation.

The "1.0-liter EcoBoost" Engine, Anticipated for Introduction in Japan
The most significant highlight is likely the expanded use of the"1.0-liter EcoBoost" engine. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is highly acclaimed globally, having won the "International Engine of the Year" award for two consecutive years in 2012 and 2013. It achieves an excellent balance of fuel efficiency and powerful performance, defying its modest 1-liter displacement.
In the European market, where the1.0-liter EcoBoost engineis already available, this engine powers 32% of current Focus models and 26% of Fiesta models. Considering the popularity of diesel engines in these markets, these figures represent a considerable market share.
In addition to the exterior and interior design updates and powertrain variations, the suspension and chassis have also been upgraded. Key improvements include enhanced interior quietness, an updated ESP program, and a rear suspension with improved road tracking (achieved through newly designed shock absorber valves), promising an even more refined driving experience.
Ford plans to increase production of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine at its Cologne, Germany plant to 1,000 units per day. The ability to meet global demand will be a key focus.
The models introduced in Japan are produced at Ford's state-of-the-art Rayong plant in Thailand, which opened in 2012. The introduction of the facelifted new Focus, along with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, remains unconfirmed for Japan, but an early release is highly anticipated.
