The 9-4X can be considered the production model of the "9-4X BioPower Concept" revealed at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, with its styling motif derived from the "AeroX Concept" shown at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.
The vehicle is a mid-size crossover positioned between the 9-3X and the 9-5.
Two V6 gasoline engines will be offered. The direct-injection 3.0-liter naturally aspirated engine produces 265 horsepower and achieves 0-100 km/h in 9 seconds. The 2.8-liter turbo, found in the "Aero" model, delivers 300 horsepower and 40.8 kgm of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
The transmission is a 6-speed automatic, and power is transmitted to the road without loss via the "Saab XWD" all-wheel-drive system, also found in the 9-3X. At the rear, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (eLSD) is integrated, allowing for front-to-rear torque distribution based on road conditions, with up to 50 percent of torque capable of being sent to the rear wheels.
The "Aero" model also comes standard with "Saab DriveSense," allowing drivers to switch between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Eco.
Regarding the interior space, it offers ample room for five adults. The rear seats feature a 60/40 split-folding design, creating a flat and spacious cargo area when needed.
The new 9-4X will go on sale in North America in May 2011, with sales in other markets beginning in August. Saab commented, "The 9-4X is a model that proposes new value with an interesting package. We are confident it will attract new customers to Saab."
