McLaren Automotive has unveiled the "Speedtail," a new hyper-GT model that it claims is its most powerful and achieves the lowest aerodynamic drag. It is the first of 18 new models under McLaren's "Track 25" business plan, with performance said to surpass that of the legendary McLaren F1.

Beautifully Streamlined Long Body, Top Speed of 403 km/h
The "Speedtail," characterized by its long-tail design, measures 5,137 mm in length. Every element and detail has been engineered with the mission to minimize aerodynamic drag and maximize top speed. From above, its form resembles a teardrop, the fastest shape in nature.
The cockpit's glasshouse also adopts a similar teardrop shape. All body panels are part of the carbon fiber "McLaren Monocage" structure, and the dry weight is kept to 1,430 kg through the use of aluminum active suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes.
Looking at the details, instead of door mirrors, retractable digital rearview cameras emerge from the doors when the ignition is activated. Their compact size minimizes impact on airflow while also offering an expanded rearward view. At near-top speeds, the cameras retract into the doors, further reducing drag.
The 20-inch, 10-spoke forged front wheels are fitted with static carbon fiber aero covers. These covers keep the air flowing off the wheels "attached" to the vehicle, guiding it towards the dihedral doors to prevent turbulence. Additionally, the tail features patented "active rear ailerons" that help minimize aerodynamic drag to the extreme.
While details of the powertrain have not been disclosed, the combined gasoline engine and electric hybrid powertrain produce a total output of 1,050 ps. Coupled with the aerodynamic body, the 0-300 km/h acceleration is achieved in 12.8 seconds (compared to 16.5 seconds for the previous Ultimate Series hybrid model, the P1). Furthermore, a top speed of 403 km/h is realized in "Velocity Mode," which optimizes the hybrid powertrain, adjusts the active rear ailerons, retracts the digital mirrors, and lowers the ride height to 1,120 mm by reducing ground clearance to 35 mm. This surpasses the F1's top speed of 391 km/h, making it the fastest McLaren production car in history.

The interior features the same layout as the F1 road car: a central driver's seat flanked by two passenger seats. The dashboard is dominated by high-resolution displays and touchscreens, with almost all traditional buttons and switches removed.
Advanced "electrochromic glass" that can be made semi-transparent with a single touch is used for the overhead glass sections above the driver, dihedral doors, and windscreen, eliminating the need for sun visors. New bespoke customizations have also been introduced, including carbon fiber with vapor-deposited titanium, "Simplicarbon" that shimmers like flowing water in collaboration with Swiss luxury watch brand Richard Mille, and lightweight leather with a full aniline finish and digital embossing. This achieves both luxury and weight reduction.
Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive, commented, "McLaren has never built a car like the Speedtail before. Our first hyper-GT, the Speedtail, is the ultimate road car, a fusion of art and science. It combines astonishing top speed, the iconic central driver's seat, and groundbreaking bespoke personalization. Its lightweight carbon fiber body, reminiscent of the 'Streamliner' that once held the world speed record, houses an innovative hybrid powertrain. We are delivering an exhilarating driving experience, unparalleled individuality, and innovative materials that cannot be found in any other road car."
The Speedtail is priced at £1.75 million (approximately ¥250 million), with a production run of 106 units. However, all have already been reserved and sold out.
