Cabin Inspired by a Jet Fighter
The "P1" first unveiled at last September's Paris Motor Show. While still a concept model,"MP4-12C""MP4-12C Spider"it was still fresh in our memories how much attention it garnered as McLaren's next special model, following the "MP4-12C Spider." The official announcement of the production model is scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show in March, but with the show's opening imminent, some of the previously hidden details have now been newly revealed.
The items announced this time are the carbon fiber cabin and the digital instrument panel. The interior, designed by McLaren with inspiration from jet fighters, features an extremely simple layout with all unnecessary elements eliminated. The large windshield, which wraps around the driver, ensures high visibility.
This P1, with its spartan appearance, has no soundproofing material in its cabin, and of course, carpeting is an option. The switches are limited to those for the air conditioning, a touch-panel navigation system, and an optional Meridian audio system. The seats are fixed bucket seats set at a 28-degree angle, and for drivers primarily focused on circuit driving, seats fixed at a 32-degree angle, compatible with helmet use, will also be offered. A six-point seatbelt is combined with these, and the seat height will be set to match individual customer specifications upon delivery.
Meanwhile, the instrument panel, unlike the analog type found in the MP4-12C, incorporates a new digital system. Normally, the display shows a rev counter marked up to 9,000 RPM, but when "Race Mode" is selected, it switches to a shift indicator display, similar to an F1 car's cockpit, where three colored lights—green, red, and blue—illuminate to signal the optimal timing.
Furthermore, in "Race Mode," the large, two-piece active rear spoiler, which is movable, extends an additional 30 centimeters compared to its normal position, ensuring optimal aerodynamic performance.
