The Avant-Garde Espada and the Rare Islero
The "Espada," Lamborghini's first four-seater production model, and the "Islero," of which only 225 units were produced, have reached their 50th anniversary. Lamborghini Polo Storico, established in 2015, has restored examples of the "Espada" and "Islero" from the Lamborghini Museum to commemorate this anniversary.
The "Espada" is a creation of Marcello Gandini, a car designer also known as a "maverick," at Carrozzeria Bertone, and is characterized by its avant-garde style. Despite its low overall height of approximately 1.2 meters, it features a design that comfortably accommodates four people.
The powertrain consists of a front-mounted 3,929cc V12 DOHC longitudinal engine, equipped with six twin-barrel Weber carburetors. Depending on the series and specifications, it achieves a maximum output of 325-350 hp and a top speed of approximately 245 km/h. It was also the first model for which Lamborghini offered an automatic transmission version upon request.
Meanwhile, the "Islero," based on the 400GT, saw the "Islero" appear from 1968-1970 and the "Islero S" in 1969. Mario Marazzi of Carrozzeria Marazzi handled the body design, and like the "Espada," it was powered by the same 3,929cc V12 DOHC unit (with the Islero producing 320 hp and the Islero S 350 hp). It boasted a top speed of 250 km/h (260 km/h for the S). However, with only 155 units of the Islero and 70 units of the Islero S produced, totaling just 225 units, it is known as a very rare model.
The 50th-anniversary events for these two models will culminate in a tour organized by Lamborghini Polo Storico in September. The tour will run from September 7th to 11th, during which collectors will drive their cherished cars over 650 km along the roads of central Italy. Visiting wineries and museums, they will proceed to Lamborghini's headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese. The final leg will include a tour of the factory where Lamborghini Polo Storico and the latest model, the "Urus," are produced.
