McLaren Announces Fourth Longtail Model, the 600LT

On June 28, McLaren announced the 600LT, a high-performance, track-focused version based on the company's 570S Coupe.

600PS, 96kg Weight Reduction, Longtail and Top-Exit Exhaust

"The 600LT is the fourth McLaren to carry the 'Longtail' name in our history of over 20 years. The original 'F1 GTR Longtail' was one of the purest race cars ever made. We want to showcase the dedication to optimizing aerodynamics, increasing power, reducing weight, track-focused dynamics, and enhancing the connection between driver and machine that defines the Longtail," said Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive.

The 600LT's 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, with an improved cooling system and a rear top-exit exhaust system that is shorter and reduces back pressure even more than that of the McLaren Senna, produces 600PS and 620Nm of torque, a 30PS and 20Nm increase over the 570S.

The weight reduction, a key objective, aimed for a 96kg decrease compared to the 570S. By adopting a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, ultra-lightweight carbon fiber seats developed for the Senna by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), roof, cantrails, and front fenders with air vents, over 23 percent of the components have been changed. This has achieved the target dry weight of 1,247kg.

The exterior features an extended silhouette, 74mm longer than the 570S, with an enlarged front splitter, extended rear diffuser, and a fixed rear wing—hence the LT, or Longtail designation. The distinctive top-exit exhaust pipes at the rear are also a striking feature.

The suspension utilizes forged aluminum double wishbones similar to the second-generation McLaren Super Series, a lightweight braking system, and Pirelli tires developed exclusively for track use. The connection between driver and machine is said to be maximized, accompanied by the roar of the exhaust emanating from behind the driver.

Orders for the 600LT opened on the same day, with production limited to approximately one year, starting in October. Each car will be hand-built at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey, UK. The car will make its public debut prior to this at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12.
