The 2018 GranTurismo and GranCabrio lineups will feature two versions: "Sport" and "MC (Maserati Corse)." Both will share the same powertrain, a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated engine paired with a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission, and the same range of interior material options.
Revisions were made to improve aerodynamic efficiency and comply with the latest pedestrian safety regulations. Regarding styling, the Maserati Design Center paid the utmost respect to the original Pininfarina design, refraining from making significant changes to the overall impression.
The newly designed front bumper incorporates motifs from the "Alfieri" concept car, created to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary. By optimizing airflow through the shark nose, hexagonal grille, and revised side air ducts, aerodynamic efficiency and the drag coefficient (Cd) have been improved from 0.33 to 0.32.
Furthermore, bi-xenon headlights with the Maserati logo, LED daytime running lights, and a more stable rear bumper design further refine the expression of the Italian grand touring car.
The MC, successor to the previous "MC Stradale," is distinguished by its 20-inch Trofeo Design silver wheels, titanium brake calipers, and vertical air vents on the front fenders. It also features a body-colored carbon fiber hood with air vents, emphasizing its status as the fastest and lightest model.
The interior presents a simple yet elegant impression, with a three-dimensional dashboard incorporating a newly developed 8.4-inch touchscreen and a center console with fewer buttons.
The traditional 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine mounted at the front produces a maximum output of 338 kW (460 hp) at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 520 Nm at 4,750 rpm. This engine, co-developed by Ferrari and Maserati and handcrafted by Ferrari in Maranello, is compact, weighing just 175 kg. It features a dry-sump lubrication system and a unique cross-plane crankshaft, delivering sharp throttle response, exhilarating revs, and a distinctive engine sound. Consequently, the lightest GranTurismo MC boasts a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 299 km/h.
The chosen venue for the Japanese debut of the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio was, remarkably, an aircraft hangar at Narita Airport. The first 28 units were air-freighted on a chartered Boeing 747 jumbo jet adorned with the Maserati logo, flying in from Milan, Italy. The announcement was made within 24 hours of arrival – a truly remarkable feat.
The unveiling event was attended by owners of the newly arrived models and Maserati enthusiasts, who gathered to celebrate the cars' arrival and launch in Japan.
Pricing is set at ¥18.9 million for the GranTurismo Sport and ¥22.16 million for the MC. For the GranCabrio, the Sport model is ¥20 million, and the MC is ¥21.75 million.
