Trim Options Expressing Individuality

The Maserati Quattroporte, Maserati's flagship saloon announced in its home country in June 2016, has now arrived in Japan.

A key highlight of the new Quattroporte is the new option, which Maserati positions as a "new trim strategy." This option emphasizes Maserati's DNA of luxury and sportiness through changes to the exterior and interior.

One of the available options is "GranLusso." "Lusso" is an Italian word meaning luxury and sophistication. Eisuke Hosokawa, Maserati Japan's Product Marketing Manager, explains, "GranLusso is adorned with special materials that reflect the craftsmanship of Italian artisans."

Specifically, it features a custom-designed front bumper and lower parts, along with 20-inch wheels and black brake calipers for enhanced styling.

The GranLusso's individuality is most evident in its interior. Radica wood is used for the interior trim panels and steering wheel, creating a chic finish. Furthermore, Ermenegildo Zegna silk is used for the seats, doors, roof lining, and sun visors. Regarding the durability of this silk, Hosokawa stated, "Silk was once used for parachutes due to its high durability. Of course, the interior of the GranLusso also uses highly durable silk." He added, "Ermenegildo Zegna tailors this quick-drying, lightweight, soft-to-the-touch, and highly durable silk specifically for Maserati." A label, similar to those found inside a suit lining, is also attached to the sun visor, leading him to comment, "It can be said to be a Maserati dressed in Ermenegildo Zegna."

The "GranSport" option, on the other hand, reflects Maserati's sporty tradition, cultivated through extensive racing experience, by altering exterior and interior parts.

The front features a redesigned center and side air intakes, improving cooling performance and giving the car a more aggressive appearance. The rear bumper is equipped with aerodynamic fins, and 20-inch Urano wheels with red brake calipers are fitted. Additionally, accents in Maserati's brand color, blue, are applied to the trident on the front grille, the Saetta logo on the C-pillar, and the wheel center caps.

The interior comes standard with sporty features such as a sports steering wheel, piano black interior trim, sports pedals, and shift paddles. Sports seats are also standard.

He stated that by introducing these two trim options, "we aim to meet more specific customer needs."

Enhanced Safety Features

Another key aspect of this facelift is the introduction of the advanced driver-assistance system, the "Advanced Driver Assistance System."

It is equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, which automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, Forward Collision Warning, which alerts the driver with visual and auditory signals when a potential collision with the vehicle ahead is detected, and Advanced Emergency Braking, which intervenes with automatic braking to mitigate collision damage if no driver action is confirmed.

Additionally, it includes standard features such as Lane Departure Warning, which alerts the driver with visual and auditory signals if an unintentional lane change is detected; Blind Spot Detection, which provides visual cues on the side mirrors and alerts the driver if a vehicle is in the blind spot, and sounds an alert if the driver attempts to change lanes (this sensor also operates when reversing); and Rear Cross Path Detection, which alerts the driver with an audible signal when a vehicle is approaching from the side during reversing.

The infotainment system has also been revamped, with icons featuring 3D effects and an upgraded screen resolution of 800x600 pixels, contributing to improved operability and visibility. A new rotary controller allows for comfortable operation in situations requiring gradual adjustments. Furthermore, smartphone connectivity has been enhanced with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A Facelift Achieving Maximum Effect with Minimal Changes

While exterior modifications are minimal, significant performance improvements have been achieved. Firstly, the newly designed bumper reduces air resistance and lift compared to the previous model, improving the Cx value by approximately 10% to 0.28.

Furthermore, the front grille incorporates active grille shutters, also featured on the Levante SUV. This system analyzes various data, including engine coolant temperature, and automatically opens to maximize cooling when the engine or brake system requires it. At other times, it remains closed to maximize downforce, crucial for driving performance.

Additionally, the engine in the base Quattroporte model has been updated. The 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine now produces 350 ps, a 20 ps increase from the previous version, with a maximum torque of 500 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 267 km/h.

Other available engines include the same 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine with 410 ps and 550 Nm specifications (Quattroporte S and Quattroporte S Q4 with AWD). The 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo engine in the Quattroporte GTS delivers 530 ps and 650 Nm of performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.

All these engines are produced at Ferrari's Maranello factory.

The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission has also been refined to improve comfort, speed up gear changes, enhance fuel efficiency, and reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness). The gear change time in Sport mode has improved by approximately 30%, allowing for shifts 0.15 seconds faster than in Normal mode, thus further clarifying the difference between Normal and Sport modes.

Quattroporte, meaning "four doors" in Italian, has a history stretching back to its debut in 1963. From its inception, it was conceived as a sporty luxury saloon, developed from a racing car engine. Its sensual engine, high drivability, and luxurious interior have captivated many car enthusiasts. This spirit continues in the latest Quattroporte.
