Class-First Dog-Ring Transmission for Road Use

FCA Japan has announced the 695 Biposto, the most powerful model created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Abarth's founding. Sales will begin as a catalog model on Tuesday, September 1st.

This model embodies the words of brand founder Carlo Abarth, "Sunday on the track, Monday at the office," and was developed with the goal of creating a car that seamlessly transitions between ultimate driving performance and daily life.

FCA describes its positioning as the road-legal version of the race-exclusive model sold by Abarth's racing division, theAbarth 695 Assetto Corse.

Two grades will be introduced: a standard specification and a full-spec version. Both are equipped with a 1.4-liter inline-4 turbo engine, producing a maximum output of 139kW (190ps). With a dry weight of 997kg in European specifications, the power-to-weight ratio is an impressive 5.2kg/ps. Maximum torque is 230Nm (23.4kgm) for the standard specification, 250Nm (25.5kgm) when the SPORT switch is engaged, and for the full-spec version, 250Nm (2.5kgm) or 270Nm (27.5kgm) with the SPORT switch on. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is a mere 5.9 seconds.

The transmission is a 5-speed manual for the standard model, while the full-spec version features a dog-ring transmission without synchros. FCA states this is the world's first application of a dog-ring transmission in a vehicle of this size that is road-legal.

To enhance engine performance, it incorporates a large racing intercooler, a carbon air cleaner box used in race vehicles, and an Akrapovic dual-stage exhaust system. The exterior is also enhanced with exclusive equipment such as 18-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels, an aluminum engine hood, and titanium wheel bolts.

Furthermore, the full-spec version features carbon parts throughout, including the inner panels, console, and center tunnel. It is equipped for immediate track use with a mechanical LSD, lightweight flywheel, metal racing clutch, an AIM MXL2 data logger, and Sabelt 4-point seatbelts.

The price is 5,944,000 yen for the standard specification and 8,456,400 yen for the full-spec version. Both will be sold with left-hand drive only.
