Pursuing Enhanced Aerodynamics

As its name suggests, the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 is a race-spec car built upon the MP4-12C to enable participation in the GT3 category. McLaren has now established McLaren GT in collaboration with CRS Racing in the UK. This GT division is responsible for the development of this model.

The development of this machine is overseen by Álvaro Parente, a 26-year-old Portuguese racer who was the champion of the 2005 British F3 Championship and the 2007 Formula Renault 3.5 Series, and competed in the GP2 Series last year with Scuderia Coloni, finishing 15th overall.

The chassis, like that of the base MP4-12C, is a monocoque called a carbon monocoque, and its single-piece structure, produced by resin transfer molding (RTM), maintains a dry weight of 75kg.

The engine is a race-tuned version of the 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo found in the MP4-12C. The transmission has been changed from the Graziano 7-speed SSG dual-clutch in the base model to a Ricardo-designed paddle-shift type. The brake calipers are from F1 supplier Akebono Brake, and the ABS is from Bosch Motorsport.

The exterior is 100mm wider than the MP4-12C, and a new suspension system developed using the McLaren F1 development simulator has been installed. Additionally, new aerodynamic parts such as a front splitter, rear wing, door blades, and rear diffuser have been added for racing, further enhancing aerodynamic performance.

However, due to FIA GT3 regulations, the Proactive Chassis Control system adopted in the base model was not implemented. This MP4-12C GT3 is scheduled to begin supply to teams from 2012. This MP4-12C GT3, a concentration of technology honed through F1 development, is poised to dominate the racing field.
